Issues and Attacks

George Allen goes on his vaunted issues tour, vowing to talk about, well, issues, I guess. But the biggest issue among the pressies trailing him is when he will stop running ads attacking James Webb.

Here's an answer for ya: He won't. He'll run even more if it looks like they are working. And here's another newsflash -- Webb would (and may) do the very same thing. Lord knows that's been Webb's web strategy to date. But that's life in the political mud pit. The pols know it, the press knows it and the public knows it, too.

And yet some wonder why voters are turned off by the entire process.

The only real news to come out of the RTD piece is the snippet from the Webb event in Old Town, where She Who Must Not Be Named (also known as Sen. Hillary Clinton...shhh!) endorsed the Democratic contender. Why is this news? Well, it's not, really. But the images captured that day by Allen's own tracker boys will make for some red hot direct mail.

"You know what the fellow said: In Italy for 30 years under the Borgias they had warfare, terror, murder and bloodshed, but they also produced Michelangelo, Leonardo da Vinci and the Renaissance. In Switzerland they had brotherly love -- they had 500 years of democracy and peace, and what did that produce? The cuckoo clock." -- Orson Welles, The Third Man

"The graveyards are full of indespensable men" -- Charles de Gaulle

"Oh, so Mother Nature needs a favor? Well maybe she should have thought of that when she was besetting us with droughts and floods and poison monkeys. Nature started the fight for survival and now she wants to quit because she's losing. Well I say, hard cheese!" -- Montgomery Burns
