The Newest Champion of Higher Taxes

None other than Sen. Jeannemarie Devolites Davis, who told a gathering of tax-philic NoVa business representatives that they must first:

...persuade three Republican members of the Finance Committee from Northern Virginia. The delegates -- Timothy D. Hugo of Fairfax and Jeffrey M. Frederick and L. Scott Lingamfelter of Prince William -- have resisted past efforts to raise taxes or fees to fund transportation improvements.

"I think it is extremely important that they be inundated," Devolites Davis said. "If your employees live in their district, have them send them an e-mail."

We all know how well that worked during the regular session, when the Kaine administration urged a similar strategy in support of higher taxes.

If this avalanche of emails does come, I suggest the response from the three Delegates in question be along the lines of what Jim Bacon wrote earlier this week.

"You know what the fellow said: In Italy for 30 years under the Borgias they had warfare, terror, murder and bloodshed, but they also produced Michelangelo, Leonardo da Vinci and the Renaissance. In Switzerland they had brotherly love -- they had 500 years of democracy and peace, and what did that produce? The cuckoo clock." -- Orson Welles, The Third Man

"The graveyards are full of indespensable men" -- Charles de Gaulle

"Oh, so Mother Nature needs a favor? Well maybe she should have thought of that when she was besetting us with droughts and floods and poison monkeys. Nature started the fight for survival and now she wants to quit because she's losing. Well I say, hard cheese!" -- Montgomery Burns
