Following the Earmarks

Via Andrew at the Club for Growth comes word of a database of earmarks that were anonymously embedded in the HHS-Labor appropriations bill. Virginia's unchampioned earmarks can be found here.

They are widely distributed, and at least have the grace to conform to the general topic of either health, human services or labor (and at least a couple of them show that former Gov. Jerry Baliles still holds a great deal of sway in Virginia politics).

But they remain unclaimed, which would seem to undercut Thelma Drake's belief that earmarks should be sought proudly and openly, and that any abuses of the system ought to be worked out in private.

Efforts to add even modest restraints on earmarks are, apparently, going nowhere.

"You know what the fellow said: In Italy for 30 years under the Borgias they had warfare, terror, murder and bloodshed, but they also produced Michelangelo, Leonardo da Vinci and the Renaissance. In Switzerland they had brotherly love -- they had 500 years of democracy and peace, and what did that produce? The cuckoo clock." -- Orson Welles, The Third Man

"The graveyards are full of indespensable men" -- Charles de Gaulle

"Oh, so Mother Nature needs a favor? Well maybe she should have thought of that when she was besetting us with droughts and floods and poison monkeys. Nature started the fight for survival and now she wants to quit because she's losing. Well I say, hard cheese!" -- Montgomery Burns
