Social Networking Jumps the Shark

Or, now political nerds can join a community of their very own and influence opinion, set trends, talk to Lance Armstrong and maybe, if they're lucky, get a thumb's up from Joe Lockhart. From the WSJ:

The advertising-supported start-up will be “the first online community that joins Opinion Drivers from across the spectrum,” according to the group’s press release. Targeting “America’s 30 million influencers,” the site will give registered users a chance to chat and interact with each other about a variety of subjects, not just politics, its founders said Tuesday. It will include some participation from celebrities and big-name politicians and business leaders to attract others into discussions, the start-up’s founders promised. Except for Lance Armstrong’s, they wouldn’t name names.

Assuming you've absolutely, positively run out of things to do -- including, but not limited to, painful elective surgery, competitive eel eating, and the latest planning commission meeting -- you can view the Hotsoup website here.

Now if you'll excuse me, I've got a doctor's appointment.

"You know what the fellow said: In Italy for 30 years under the Borgias they had warfare, terror, murder and bloodshed, but they also produced Michelangelo, Leonardo da Vinci and the Renaissance. In Switzerland they had brotherly love -- they had 500 years of democracy and peace, and what did that produce? The cuckoo clock." -- Orson Welles, The Third Man

"The graveyards are full of indespensable men" -- Charles de Gaulle

"Oh, so Mother Nature needs a favor? Well maybe she should have thought of that when she was besetting us with droughts and floods and poison monkeys. Nature started the fight for survival and now she wants to quit because she's losing. Well I say, hard cheese!" -- Montgomery Burns
