Inching Foward on the Budget

The legislature is moving ever-so-slowly forward on the budget. Or parts of it, at least:

“Today, a bi-partisan majority of the House voted to approve an agreement, reached by our conferees and the conferees for the Senate, making final amendments to the current 2004-2006 Biennial Budget. Today’s action is an important, positive step toward resolving the current budget impasse.

“When it convenes on Friday, it is our understanding that the Senate will follow our lead in confirming this agreement by passing House Bill 5012. By approving legislation based upon a pre-agreed compromise, both bodies are expediting the legislative process – something I hope we will continue to do as we complete our work on the 2006-2008 Biennial Budget.

“After the Senate acts on Friday, House Bill 5012 will be forwarded to the Governor, which will enable him to ‘close” the books for this fiscal year. At that point, the main agenda item remaining for the General Assembly will be to reach an agreement on the 2006-2008 Biennial Budget.

In other words, the big important stuff that's caused all the ruckus is still hanging out there, but budgeting for the remaining few weeks of this term is about done.

Hooray.
