Manoli's Mixed Coverage

Richmond City Council President Manoli Loupassi can't catch a break. On the same day he offers a paper to ban nepotism in city hiring (aimed squarely at Mayor Wilder's nephew), we also read that he's defending an accused masturbator (to borrow a portion Style Weekly's headline) who was caught in the act just a couple of blocks from St. Catherine's school (which, for those who don't know, is an all-girls school in Loupassi's council district).

Local residents interviewed for the Style piece are livid. Manoli is apologetic. But hey -- he's on retainer.

One step forward and three steps back for the man who would be Lieutenant Governor.

"You know what the fellow said: In Italy for 30 years under the Borgias they had warfare, terror, murder and bloodshed, but they also produced Michelangelo, Leonardo da Vinci and the Renaissance. In Switzerland they had brotherly love -- they had 500 years of democracy and peace, and what did that produce? The cuckoo clock." -- Orson Welles, The Third Man

"Oh, so Mother Nature needs a favor? Well maybe she should have thought of that when she was besetting us with droughts and floods and poison monkeys. Nature started the fight for survival and now she wants to quit because she's losing. Well I say, hard cheese!" -- Montgomery Burns
