First Coburn Amendments Fail

By a lop-sided 86-13 margin, the Senate voted to keep pork projects in Nebraska, Rhode Island, and Seattle. Mark Tapscott says:

It appears the majority of senators think it is more important to shelter dogs and cats in Rhode Island than people in Louisiana and Mississippi made homeless by Hurricane Katrina.

Not a good sign. The "bridge to nowhere" vote happens later this afternoon. If the vote is anything like this earlier tally, then the GOP Senate has officially outlived its usefulness.

Here are those who voted in favor of this Coburn amendment:

George Allen (R-VA)
Richard Burr (R-NC)
Tom Coburn (R-OK)
Jim DeMint (R-SC)
John Ensign (R-NV)
Russ Feingold (D-WI)
Lindsey Graham (R-SC)
Chuck Hagel (R-NE)
Jon Kyl (R-AZ)
McCain (R-AZ)
Pete Sessions (R-AL)
John Sununu (R-NH)
Jim Talent (R-MO)

George Allen is on the list. John Warner is not. Good for Allen.

"You know what the fellow said: In Italy for 30 years under the Borgias they had warfare, terror, murder and bloodshed, but they also produced Michelangelo, Leonardo da Vinci and the Renaissance. In Switzerland they had brotherly love -- they had 500 years of democracy and peace, and what did that produce? The cuckoo clock." -- Orson Welles, The Third Man

"Oh, so Mother Nature needs a favor? Well maybe she should have thought of that when she was besetting us with droughts and floods and poison monkeys. Nature started the fight for survival and now she wants to quit because she's losing. Well I say, hard cheese!" -- Montgomery Burns
