Bolling, McDonnell in the Lead

Garren Shipley provides a look at the downticket numbers for Lt. Gov. and Atty. General:

In the lieutenant governor’s race, state Sen. Bill Bolling, R-Mechanicsville, holds a lead over Democratic former Rep. Leslie Byrne equal to the poll’s margin of error, 41 percent to 37 percent. Some 22 percent remain undecided.

Further down the ballot, Republican Bob McDonnell holds the only statistically significant lead in any of the three statewide races. The Virginia Beach delegate leads state Sen. Creigh Deeds, D-Bath County, 42 percent to 34 percent.

The Bolling/Byrne contest features some of the sharpest elbows and nastiest ads in the entire race. On the other side, McDonnell and Deeds have kept the tone more civil, but McDonnell does have a gut-punch ad in heavy rotation in the Richmond market.

The undecided segment remains very high in both races, while name ID is low. Anyone could win and in Bolling's case, his fate could be tied somewhat to Kilgore's. But don't count on that. Bolling is the darling of the flat-earth set and they would crawl across broken glass to vote for him. McDonnell, too. And who knows? This could be an election where the bottom of the ticket ends up carrying the candidate in the top slot across the finish line.
