The Behl Affect

From the Hotline Blog:

Although Kilgore has only alluded to it when it was raised in the context of a question during the candidates' most recent and final debate over a week ago, the tragic disappearance and murder of 17-year old VA Commonwealth Univ. student Taylor Behl has the potential to rekindle interest in the issue, capital punishment, that Kilgore has sought to define Kaine with and perhaps create a powerful free media supplement to Kilgore's aggressive ad campaign.

And this:

Most notably, the Sat. Post story included this in the Subheadline: "Parent Calls for Death Penalty for Killer of VCU Freshman From Vienna" and this quote from Behl's mother in the story's second paragraph: "'May the courts see fit to give him the death penalty so he may continue his downward spiral into the depths of hell,' a sobbing Janet Pelasara said in a brief statement to reporters outside the Church of the Holy Comforter in Vienna."

Though both candidates have wisely avoided mentioning such a delicate topic, could a still-unfolding issue "ripped from the headlines" subtly and subliminally aid Kilgore and move an electorate otherwise focused on schools, roads, and the price at the pump?

It will be interesting to watch.

"You know what the fellow said: In Italy for 30 years under the Borgias they had warfare, terror, murder and bloodshed, but they also produced Michelangelo, Leonardo da Vinci and the Renaissance. In Switzerland they had brotherly love -- they had 500 years of democracy and peace, and what did that produce? The cuckoo clock." -- Orson Welles, The Third Man
